Who Are Lions and What Do Lions Do? The Lions Club was founded in Chicago in 1917 and currently is the largest service organization in the world with 1.3 million members in 45,000 clubs in over 200 countries. Inspired by Helen Keller, fighting blindness and aid to the blind and visually impaired is a major goal of our services, including: recycling eyeglasses, supporting eye banks and supporting clinics, hospitals and eye research centers. Other areas supported locally, nationally and internationally include: diabetes control and prevention, hearing programs, health programs, youth programs, environmental programs and disaster relief. Lions worldwide volunteer their time to help directly and in fundraising to support these important health, community and humanitarian needs. The Lions Club of Upper St. Clair was founded in 1955. Funds raised have enabled us to contribute to visually related organizations, Upper St. Clair community organizations as well as organizations in the broader local community including: Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Radio Information Service, Family Hospice and Palliative Care, South Hills Interfaith Ministries Food Bank, USC-Bethel meals on Wheels and the Upper St. Clair Library. Funds have also been provided to the needy for eye examinations and eyeglasses. Hundreds of pairs of previously worn eye glasses are collected for recycling each year. Currently the Upper St. Clair Lions Club fund raisers include: the sale of high quality 30 gallon, 33 gallon and kitchen plastic trash bags which can be purchased and delivered to homes and to businesses throughout the year. Compostable paper leaf bags are available for purchase and pick up at the USC Dept. of Public Works garage on McLaughlin Run Rd. Saturday mornings in October and November. Meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays September to May at 7 PM and last about 2 hours. Potential members are welcome to join us at a meeting. Become a Lion - help make a difference. For more information contact any officer (they will be happy to answer your questions about membership, activities and current prices for items we sell) or contact us by mail at USC Lions, PO Box 12778, Upper St. Clair, PA 15241. |
