Who Are Lions and What Do Lions Do?

The Lions Club was founded in Chicago in 1917 when Melvin Jones convinced his luncheon club to form a national organization dedicated to networking for business and social purposes and to improve the local community.

There are over 45,000 Lions Clubs with more than 1.4 million members in over 193 countries, making the Lions the largest service organization in the world.

Most of the world's eye banks were established and are supported by Lions, as are hundreds of clinics, hospitals and eye research centers.  Lions also recycle eyeglasses and support research for diabetes and diabetic eye disease.

The Upper St. Clair Lions Club was formed in 1955.  Fund raisers have enabled the club to contribute to many local organizations some of which are shown below:

  • Pittsburgh Vision Services
  • Leader Dogs for the Blind
  • Meals on Wheels
  • South Hills Hospice
  • Radio Information Service
  • Western PA School for the Blind
  • Children's Institute
  • Upper St. Clair Library

Upper St. Clair Lions also provide funds to the needy for eye exams and glasses.

Lions volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in local and world communities.  Lions Clubs throughout the world donated over $3,000,000 to the 9/11 tragedies in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, PA and contributed generously to the Tsunami devastation.

Currently the Upper St. Clair Lions fund raisers are: the sale of straw brooms that are made by the visually impaired, high quality plastic trash bags and several kinds of nuts.  These can be purchased and delivered to your home or business throughout the year.  In October and November "leaf bags" are available for purchase and pick-up at the USC Department of Public Works on MacLaughlin Run Road.

Remember, your purchase of these quality items enable the Lions to donate money to organizations that are dependent on money obtained from service clubs and foundations.

You can make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.  Become a Lion and reap the benefits of having helped those in need.  Meetings last about two hours and are on the first and third Wednesdays at 7:00 pm.

For more information , log on to www.mainstreetusc.com or write us at USC Lions, P.O. Box 12778, Upper St. Clair, PA 15241 or contact any officer.  They will be available to advise you of current prices for items we sell.
