Current Activity Summary Report of the Community Foundation of Upper St. Clair 

  • A $175 request by two USCHS Students was approved to cover the promotion costs for Break It Down: Breaking Cultural Barriers through Music & Dance, a student-run production showcasing various ethnic cultures and cuisines in the district.  Proceeds were donated to Supporters of Sean Roche, a 2007 USC graduate, for a heart transplant this past May.
  • The CF donated two baskets of foundation gifts to the Upper St. Clair Volunteer Fire Department's Monte Carlo night at St. Louise's Le Gras Hall on March 17.
  • Mr. Jim Bennett, former USCHS Band Director and current Chair of the CF Fine & Performing Arts Committee, organized a Chautauqua Model summer  program at the USCHS, beginning with an Acting Workshop in July by USC alumnus, Ponny Conomos, and a string instrument workshop in August by the Suzuki Institute.
  • A one-time grant of $2,500 was approved to augment $1,500 from the school PTAs for support of the REEC (Regional Environmental Education Center), as well as SWEP (School-Wide Enrichment Program). 
  • CFUSC accepted the challenge of a $120,000 Freeman Foundation Matching Grant for the Asian Studies Program at USC High School.
  • In partnership with the USC High School Counseling Department, CFUSC continued the seminar series of providing information and suggestions for students and parents regarding the process of  college selection, visitations, admittance procedures, and securing college scholarships and loans. Last March’s seminar featured representatives from Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University, Penn State Schreyer Honors College and Virginia Tech.
  • The Community Foundation of Upper St. Clair is currently the depository for four college scholarship funds:  Ted Barnett Scholarship, Ellie Batz Scholarship, William A. Pope, Ph.D, Scholarship, T.J. White Upper St. Clair Athletic Scholarship.  Information and criteria may be obtained by contacting the USCHS Counseling Department.
  • The Community Foundation’s major contributions on Community Day include $225 for the three parade float prizes, a $500 grant to the township for the Moon Walk and Kids Train, and the ever popular Duck Race.
  • The USCHS Ethics & Integrity Committee grant request for $1,750 was approved for consulting fees associated with the Duke University Center for Academic Integrity.
  • A $670 grant request from Jane Hollman and  Evelyn Murrin, former USCHS English teacher  and retired school district school psychologist, respectively, was approved to publish the collected speeches of Dr. William A. Pope, former USC School District Superintendent.
  • A $407.50 grant was provided to the USCHS Crew to cover half of the costs to repair their skull,“Serendipity.”
  •  October, 2006, the CFUSC Education & Lifelong Learning Focus Committee sponsored the ABCs of School Finance seminar to address the questions of what the trends are in funding public education in PA and across the country, how your tax dollars move through the system and into the classroom, and what must be considered in a school budget?
  • The Recreation & Leisure Focus Committee of the Foundation continued to sponsor the Trail Bike, Fly Fishing and Bocce Clubs.  The Trail Bike Club participated in the Multiple Sclerosis 150 Escape to the Lake in June, the Rotary Club Bike-a-Thon at Ohiopyle in July, and a Fall Foliage Bike Ride at Ohiopyle on October 20th.  The Fly Fishing Club sponsored  monthly meetings, the Fly Fishing Expo at the USC Rec Center last March, and Steelhead fishing trips to Lake Erie 
  • The Bocce Club featured a couples league last summer, as well as a mens group.  Information and enrollment in any of the clubs can be gotten by calling George Pitcairn, (412) 831-7126.
